Stained glass in the sanctuary

Zebulun
Artist:
Maria Stolz

“Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out.” Deu. 33:18

Photo: Zebulun windowThe tribe of Zebulun lived and thrived by the sea as merchants and even though their standard is a ship, they were not seafarers.  While his brother Issachar studied Torah, Zebulun faced and confronted the world of commerce; they were the quintessential entrepreneurs of the House of Israel.  That is what is meant, I believe, by “going out.”

Since these windows have been up for awhile, this window, I have heard, has already received the moniker “the Santa Cruz window.”

While including elements such as ships, birds, fish, I included a Mediterranean dolphin as such dolphins exist.

Lastly because of Zebulun’s oceanic inheritance, it is interesting to note that glass was manufactured from the sand in their territory, extending from the Sea of Kinneret, better known as the Galilee.
