Adult education classes promote Jewish learning while encouraging individuals to develop a personal belief system based on contemporary experiences. Community enrichment programs offer religious, educational and social opportunities for the larger Santa Cruz community.

We offer a wide variety of life-enriching classes for all ages. These are some of our course staples, and we augment them with a variety of special classes:

  • Basic Judaism series includes three courses: The Jewish Holidays, Jewish Beliefs About G-d, and The Bible Through Jewish Eyes

We continually offer relevant programs for the entire community:

Senior Programs

Daytime programs offer a rich variety of lectures, discussions, films, performances, art and health workshops, luncheons, and popular community excursions. Call ahead if transportation arrangements are needed. Programs are subject to change.

New! Senior Connections will be meeting on the second Monday of every month in addition to their usual fourth Monday of the month!

Senior connectionsSeniors are invited to these free programs which usually meet on the 4th Monday of the month from 1:30–4:00 pm in the Social Hall. (Check the captions below for times as there is a variance in time every now and then.) Refreshments will be served. Visit with friends and make new friends.

Monday April 14th, 1:30-4pm
Morton Marcus will read from and discuss his brand new book, "Striking through the Masks: A Literary Memoir". His new writings chronicles his meetings with many famous literary personalities, and his first hand experiences with anti-semitism while growing up in New York.

Monday April 28th*** 1pm sharp!
Dr. Daniel Marcus: "Pain in Older Persons"; Dr. Harvey Fishman: "Tactical Display Glasses for Macular Degeneration"; Martha Benedict, O. M. D.: "Nutrition for Feeling Young-One Chinese Point of View"; Jerry Goldstein, Ph.D.: "Better Hearing and Newest Options". 15 minute break between each speaker and time for questions.

***Please note that our April 28th program will begin at 1pm sharp as we have 4 speakers and want to give each of them enough time.

Renowned Jewish thinkers gift us each year with a series of stimulating and memorable lectures on topics of interest. This year's Scholar-in-Residence Program was:

"Hello G-d Can We Talk?" with Rabbi Wayne Dosick, Scholar-in-Residence
February 8, 9, & 10 2008
Rabbi Wayne Dosick P.h.D is an award winning author and teacher of Kabbalah and spirituality. He will be discussing how contemporary society can be transformed when we bring the transcendent world of the spirit and enduring ethical values to our families, our faith communities, our buisnesses, our hearts, and our souls.

Friday, February 8- Sunday, February 10
Have you ever said to yourself, "Hello G-d, Can We Talk?" This is the theme of the 2008 Scholar in Residence program. Our scholar is Rabbi Wayne Dosick, a well-known educator, writer, spiritual guide and healer. Rabbi Dosick teaches and counsels about faith and spirit, ethical values, life transformations and evolving human consciousness.

Friday night Feb. 8, 7:30pm
Rabbi Dosick will speak after a short Kabbalat Shabbat service on "Dancing with G-d: When Life Hurts," dealing with difficulty and suffering.

Saturday Feb. 9, 11:00am after Minyan (9:30am)
Rabbi Dosick will discuss the topic "Your Money and Your Life: You Can Have Both." You are welcome to stay for lunch is 12:30pm-1:30pm , $10 and by reservation only.

Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9, 1:30pm
Rabbi Dosick will present "Our G-d of Good, Our G-d of Evil," a study of translated Jewish texts on good and evil.

Sunday, February 10, 9:30am-11:00am
Rabbi Dosick’s presentation is especially for Temple school parents on "Bringing Up Ethical Children in Unethical Times."

Sunday, February 10, 1:00pm
He will present “20-Minute Kabbalah”, The Daily Personal Spiritual Practice for a sliding scale fee of $36, $54 or $72 (suggested). All other events are free of charge.

Winter/Spring Classes

Community Torah study with Rabbi Paula Marcus Community Torah Study
FREE and open to the public. The Torah has guided the Jewish people throughout our history, transmitting the wisdom and values of our tradition. Join us with your brown bag lunch to study and discuss the week's parsha or portion. Beginners welcome.

Community Torah Study meets on Thursdays at 12:00 noon .


Basic Judaism Classes
If you want to learn more about your Jewish Heritage, are a non-Jewish member of a Jewish household, or are considreing conversio to Judaism these are the classes for you! These classes are free to new members within their first three years at TBE.

The Holidays: Traditional and Contemporary Practice Sundays, 11:15am- 12:45pm, October 14-December 2.
Learn about the Jewish Holiday cycle, it's connections to agriculture in ancient Israel and how we mark Jewish time. Instructor: Linda McConnell.
$25 TBE members, $50 Public, FREE to new TBE members in their first three years.

Taste of Judaism Class: Are You Curious?
Thursdays, January 17,24 & 31, 7:30pm
A free three session class for beginners-Jewish or not- that explores the topics of Jewish spirituality, ethics and community, designed for unaffiliated Jews, non-Jews, intermarried couples and all searching for an entry into Jewish life. All are welcome. Pre-registration is required, please use the form in the Shofar. For more information please contact the Temple Beth El office. The next two classes are January 24 and January 31, 7:30pm

The Bible through Jewish eyesSundays, 11:15 am to 12:45 pm, December 9-February 3.
Become familiar with the Five Books of Moses and the many traditional
and modern approaches to their interpretation. Instructor: Linda McConnell.
$25 TBE members, $50 Public, FREE to new TBE members in their first three years.

Living Judaism with Rabbi Paula
Begins Sunday, January 13, 9:30- 11:00am
The first of three classes, Rabbi Paula will be teaching from the book Blessing of a Skinned Knee, by Wendy Mogul. The discussion will be focusing on how to raise your child to be successful, independent and a mensch. The next two classes will be Sundays, January 27 & February 3, 9:30-11:00.

Living Judaism with Rabbi Rick
Sunday February 24, April 6 & April 13, 9:30-11:00
The topic of this class is Developing a Jewish Spiritual Practice. The class will create a brief personal daily Jewish spiritual practice that will be based in part on the teaching of Leonard Felder in his book , Seven Prayers That Can Change Your Life: How to Use Spiritual Wisdom to Enhance Your Health, Relationships, and Daily Effectiveness.

Jewish Beliefs about God with Rabbi Rick Sundays, 11:15 am to 12:45 pm, February 24- May 4.
Develop your own theology in light of traditional and modern views. Instructor: Rabbi Richard Litvak. $25 TBE members, $50 Public, FREE to new TBE members in their first three years.
