Brotherhood Brunch-Saving Island Ecosystems Across the Planet-SH

Sunday, May 19, 2019 14 Iyar 5779

10:00 AM - 12:00 PMSocial Hall

Speaker: Heath Packard of Island Conservation

We often think of islands as vacation spots, ideal for relaxing and enjoying beautiful surroundings. What's less appreciated is that islands play a critical role in the Earth's biological diversity. Islands occupy only 5% of our planet's landmass, yet are inhabited by a remarkable range of avian, amphibian and mammalian species. Unfortunately, many of these species are threatened by the spread of invasive plants and animals. To fight the resulting wave of habitat destruction and species extinctions, Island Conservation, founded in Santa Cruz, is working to restore natural island ecosystems. Please join us for our next Brotherhood brunch featuring speaker Heath Packard, who leads island restoration and outreach efforts. Heath holds an MA in philosophy and social policy from American University in Washington, DC and has served as field director for the National Wildlife Refuge Association. Beginning at 10:00 AM, we'll enjoy our always delicious lox and bagel brunch, take care of a little Brotherhood business, followed by Heath's talk at 11:00, concluding before noon. Recommended donation is $5 for Brotherhood members and $7 for non-members.
