Providing Food to the Homeless in Santa Cruz
Every Sunday of the Year Since 1988

Mazon is our longest running social action project. Over the course of each year, countless Temple Beth El volunteers take turns collectively providing Sunday dinner for the Santa Cruz Homeless Shelter, every Sunday of the year!

Temple members are always needed to participate in our Mazon (Sustenance) Project at the River Street Shelter by signing up in advance to join the monthly e-mail reminder list. To provide a dish for the Sunday meal any week of the year, please use the Temple Beth El Mazon SignUpGenius link.

Those who sign up each week are asked to bring enough for large helpings and some seconds. Food should be dropped off on Sundays between 2:30 and 4:00 PM as dinner is served promptly at 4:30 PM.

The Shelter’s address is 115 C Building, Coral Street off Hwy 9.

Take River Street towards Felton – turn LEFT on Fern Street – turn LEFT on Limekiln – turn LEFT on Coral – turn RIGHT at the driveway before the multi-story Rebele Family Shelter and go to the end of the driveway--the River Street Shelter will be on the left side in the last building at the end of the driveway. It is single story, and painted green. There’s a white picket fence in front. There is a sign on the Shelter building.

On Yom Kippur, the prophet Isaiah reminds us one of the highest religious acts of Judaism is "to share your bread with the hungry" (58:6). Through the mitzvah of the Mazon Project, we fulfill the Jewish dictum to cherish the divine image in every person, especially by caring for the poor and the stranger. Also, we bring the holiness of Yom Kippur into our daily lives throughout the year.

Inquiries can be directed to Mazon Project Co-Coordinators:

Marcia Kahn Meyer, Zena Krakowski, Karen Green & Judi Wyant serving dinner on behalf of TBE at the River Street Shelter on 4/30/17. They sum up their experience of providing meals on Sunday evenings as "Privileged to prepare and present the evening meal to these wonderful people. We always leave feeling uplifted."

If you offer your compassion to the hungry
           And satisfy the famished creature
Then shall your light shine in darkness
And your gloom shall be like noonday.
