Inspired by Jewish values and ideals, MAZON is a national organization fighting to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel. It has a network of nearly 1,000 synagogues that mobilize their congregations and their communities to help end the injustice of hunger.

Our Temple Beth El MAZON Project has been providing food to the Santa Cruz homeless shelter every Sunday since 1988.  We encourage every TBE household to participate at least once per year by signing up in advance to contribute to a meal.

One of the highest religious acts of Judaism is "to share your bread with the hungry".  Through the mitzvah of the MAZON Project, we fulfill the Jewish dictum to cherish the divine image in every person, especially caring for the poor and the stranger.  Also, we bring the holiness of Yom Kippur into our daily lives throughout the year.  This is how we put our Jewish values into action.

"Marcia Kahn Meyer, Zena Krakowski, Karen Green & Judi Wyant serving dinner on behalf of TBE's MAZON Project at our local homeless shelter. They sum up their experience of participating as, "Privileged to prepare and present the evening meal to these wonderful people. We always leave feeling uplifted."

If you offer your compassion to the hungry
And satisfy the famished creature
Then shall your light shine in darkness
And your gloom shall be like noonday.
-Isaiah 58:10
