Brotherhood Wildflower Hike and Picnic Lunch

Sunday, April 30, 2023 9 Iyar 5783

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Come join Brotherhood’s hike and picnic!  Many folks may not be aware of the Glenwood Open Space Preserve, located north and east of Scotts Valley High School.  With funding from the California Wildlife Conservation Board, the City of Scotts Valley protected this land in 2003.  Scotts Valley partners with the Santa Cruz County Land Trust to manage the property for special species protection and compatible access.  With this winter’s rains, the colorful wildflowers should be out in bloom by mid-April.  The Preserve covers 170 acres.  West Glenwood has 3 miles of mild-gradient trails that allow dogs, horses and bikes (except for the portion that connects to Salvation Army’s Redwood Glen Conference Center off Bean Creek).  East Glenwood has 4.2 miles of mild-gradient hiker-only trails.  More info about the Preserve is at Glenwood Open Space Preserve | Land Trust Sant Cruz (landtrustsantacruz.org).
Hike. We’re hiking East Glenwood (no dogs or bikes).  The trailhead is adjacent to a small parking lot located on the right (northern) side of Glenwood Drive before you get to the high school.  If it’s full, there’s tons of overflow parking in the high school parking lot.  TBE’s own Mimi Guiney, a former State Parks Ranger, will be our nature guide.  We’ll depart the trailhead at 10:00 sharp on Sunday, April 30.  Bring water, a hat, and (depending on weather) layers.  Total hike time: roughly 90 minutes.
Lunch.  Afterwards, we’ll eat under the ramada at Siltanen Park, just a short walk from the East Glenwood trailhead.  Bring your own sandwich or main course and Brotherhood will provide noshes, fruit, drinks and dessert.  IF IT’S RAINING HARD, WE’LL POSTPONE.  Although RSVPs aren’t necessary, please let Mike know if you’re planning to attend (mike@reinlaw.net).  The cost of all this fresh air and exercise and noshes with your friends?  Nothing!  So come participate!
