In Hebrew and Yiddish, chutzpah is used to describe someone who has overstepped the boundaries of accepted behavior. The Bible includes very few narratives about women. When it does, the women are usually subservient and honored because of their supporting role (usually to their husband, sometimes to a parent or parent-in-law). We are going to study some chutzpadik women who stand out because of their own actions, who overstepped the boundaries of accepted behavior. We’ll not only read the biblical text but also what the rabbis of the Talmud had to say about them.
