Jewish Poetry for Heart and Mind with Rabbi Pam Wax on Zoom

Sunday, January 22, 2023 29 Tevet 5783

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

This workshop will offer an overview and discussion of Jewish poetry through the ages, from the Bible to today, with an emphasis on contemporary poetry written in English. We will discuss a number of selected poems for content, meaning and form and attempt to answer questions such as "What makes a poem Jewish?" “What makes poetry a spiritual practice?”and "What makes a poem a poem?”

After serving as a hospital chaplain, as a congregational rabbi, and as assistant director of adult Jewish education for the Reform movement, Rabbi Pamela Wax ran a Jewish spiritual healing center for 19 years, offering pastoral counseling individually and in groups, as well as spiritual journeying groups. She is now the adult educator at a Conservative synagogue in addition to offering ongoing on-line Mussar and poetry workshops. She is the author of a full-length book of poetry, Walking the Labyrinth (Main Street Rag, 2022), and the forthcoming chapbook Starter Mothers (Finishing Line Press). Her poems have received awards from Crosswinds Poetry Journal, Paterson Literary Review, Oberon Poetry Magazine, the Robinson Jeffers Tor House, as well as a Best of the Net nomination, and have appeared in numerous literary journals. She got her start in the rabbinate at TBE, having lived in Santa Cruz from 1982-1986—where she also began writing poetry.
