Our sense of who God is and what God does will forever be linked to the ancient Israelites and their core text, the Hebrew Bible. In this session, we wil ldiscover how their ideas about God drew on Canaanite, Mesopotamian and Egyptian notions about the divine. Then, we will explore Israel’s profound (and sometimes troubling) theological breakthroughs that gave birth to the world’s first enduring monotheism. We’ll also address the many names of the God of Israel acquired over time as well as the wife that was lost in the process.
