Culminating with a powerful and profound full orchestra premiere of Jake Heggie’s Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope, with texts by Gene Scheer, and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra led by Cristian Măcelaru and three spectacular guest artists: mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, violinist Benjamin Beilman, and youth violinist Thaïs Chernyavsky. Written in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Intonations is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, based on stories told by musicologist James A. Grymes in his book Violins of Hope: Violins of the Holocaust. The work is inspired by the Violins of Hope collection—instruments that were played by Jews in concentration camps during the Holocaust and subsequently recovered and meticulously restored by Israeli violinmakers Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein.
