KEF: Midweek Hebrew Offerings (4th-6th)

כֵּיף (KEF) means fun in Hebrew, and also stands for Kid's Education Fun! It is a menu of four options tailored to your needs. Registered 4th through 6th graders can sign up for all options, or choose what works for them and their families. The options are:

  • Wednesday Hebrew School at TBE
  • Hebrew School outdoors on the Westside
  • Online individual instruction
  • Judaism Outdoors

Please read the following descriptions to learn more! Once you have registered for Temple School, you will receive an email to indicate which programs you'd like to participate in. If you have any questions, please contact Roxy Tracy at rtracy@tbeaptos.org.

KEF:

Wednesdays at TBE 4:00-5:30pm

Mondays OR Tuesdays outdoors on the Westside 4:00-5:15pm (day and location TBD based on enrollment)

Although students learn the Alef-Bet and start learning to read Hebrew on Sundays at Temple School, preparations for a student's Beit Mitzvah really begin during KEF midweek programs! In groups of their peers, students will become comfortable reading Hebrew so that they can fully participate in services and be ready when they receive their Torah portion. KEF is held on Wednesdays at TBE, as well as on an additional day outdoors on the Westside for the convenience of families on that side of town. The exact day and location of the Westside class will be decided based on enrollment.

Online Individual Instruction:

All learners can benefit from additional one on one self-paced Hebrew learning! We encourage everyone to register for this program with Morah Ilana Goldstein. She will help your learner work through basic biblical Hebrew and some modern Hebrew words to prepare them for their Beit Mitzvah. Your child will have a 15 minute meeting with her every week over Zoom with follow up homework assignments. Students who are registered for 4th-6th grade are entitled to 20 sessions.

Judaism Outdoors:

TBD on the Westside of Santa Cruz (locations change)

This program invites kids outdoors in the beautiful nature on the Westside of Santa Cruz. We will be rotating locations and going on hikes, beach walks, and exploring other interesting locations. This program offers an earth-based Jewish lens for the adventurous student. We will meet at sites such as: The Homeless Garden Project, Natural Bridges State Beach, Cowell's at a low tide, Wilder hiking and more!

Jewish content will be infused into our activities. We will learning blessings for being in nature and honoring the natural world, explore meditation techniques, hear relevant Torah stories while out in nature, learn about specific Jewish values and Jewish law that connects to nature and more.
